Notably, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing between fourth and tenth.

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, finishing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with recording 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the title match against the USA, he slugged a equalizing home run in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
