Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
