Lando Norris Moves Closer to Title as Verstappen Secures Las Vegas F1 Race Win
Lando Norris currently holds a 30-point lead over teammate Oscar Piastri with just 58 points available in the remaining events
McLaren's Lando Norris stepped closer to his first world title with runner-up position in the Vegas race following Red Bull's Max Verstappen
The British driver currently heads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place behind Mercedes' George Russell, by 30 points heading to the penultimate race in Qatar next weekend
The Briton will claim the title in the desert as long as he does not lose more than five points to Piastri in Losail, or 17 to Verstappen
Piastri, so impressive in the first half of the championship, has not finished on the podium for six consecutive events
"Max had a good race. I made the mistake at the beginning and was too punchy on that first turn," said Norris
"It remains a good result to secure second place. I've got to praise Max and his team"
Following Qatar, the final race of the championship takes place in Abu Dhabi on 7 December
The key stories of one of Formula 1's most high-profile races were:
Norris maintained his progress towards the title despite the win to Verstappen
Oscar Piastri's challenging performance streak persisted as his title hopes diminish
A superb win for Verstappen to keep him in the title fight
Fightbacks for the two Ferrari drivers, after a tough qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton claiming a point for 10th following beginning at the back
Verstappen Stays in Title Contention
Verstappen overtakes Lando Norris at the beginning after the McLaren driver ran wide at the first corner
From the beginning, Norris was faithful to his claim that he was "not present to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to defend his lead from pole position from Verstappen
However following an aggressive cut in front of the Red Bull driver to block the Dutchman's attack on the inner line, the McLaren driver miscalculated his braking point and ran deep into the corner
That allowed Verstappen to drive past into the lead while Norris lost the runner-up spot to Russell
During two virtual safety cars for some early incidents, featuring at the beginning when the Racing Bulls Liam Lawson collided with Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen gradually established dominance on the race
Russell made an early pit stop for the more durable compound, but Lando Norris and Verstappen remained on track
Norris pitted five laps following the Mercedes driver and Verstappen 10
The Red Bull driver was able to return still in the first place, Russell having been unable to close in on the Red Bull even with his newer rubber
Lando Norris returned after Russell from his pit stop but following a few cautious laps to let his tires to warm up, quickly reduced his 3.3-second deficit to the Mercedes driver and overtook into second place on the thirty-fourth lap
The British driver asked his engineer how to manage the rest of his event, effectively questioning whether he should settle for second or attack
He was instructed to "go and get Verstappen" but it quickly became apparent he had no chance. Max Verstappen was readily could defend against Norris' challenges, and in the closing stages the gap increased substantially as the McLaren car started to experience a technical issue which has thus far not been defined
Even with losing almost three seconds a lap, Norris was could defend against George Russell because of the size of the advantage he had established while pursuing Max Verstappen
The Red Bull driver's sixth victory of the season - just one less than both McLaren teammates - was taken in emphatic style and maintains him in title contention, at minimum theoretically, even if he requires issues for Lando Norris in the final two events to overtake him
"It remains a significant margin, we consistently attempt to optimize everything we've have," Verstappen said
"During the coming events we will attempt to win the race and by the conclusion of Abu Dhabi we will see where we end up, but I'm very proud of everyone"
'Frustrating Event' for Oscar Piastri
Oscar Piastri began in fifth but dropped two positions on the opening lap after being hit by Lawson, who was quickly eliminated of contention by a damaged nose section
He trailed Liam Lawson's team-mate Isack Hadjar for the opening fifteen circuits before overtaking him on the Strip but also position to Charles Leclerc, who he was could overtake again during the tire change phase
The Australian finished behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, who competed nearly the entire race on the durable compound following pitting during the first virtual safety car, but was given a five-second time penalty for a starting procedure violation, which was not clearly visible on replays
"It was a frustrating race from essentially beginning to end in some ways," Piastri told race broadcasters
Questioned about how he would approach the remaining events, he commented: "Simply attempt to put myself in the optimal situation I can. I obviously require several of factors to go my way at this stage to win, but my only option is ensure I'm in the best position to capitalise if something happens"
Leclerc held on in sixth place, insufficiently close to gain from Kimi Antonelli's penalty, while Carlos Sainz fell to seventh at the flag, his Williams car missing the pace to compete with the leading outfits in the dry, after his heroic showing to qualify in third in the wet weather
Hadjar secured eighth ahead of Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton
The seven-time champion executed a strong getaway, up to thirteenth on the first lap and continued to advance positions
He became trapped in a slipstream group with a group of additional vehicles but was able to employ his strong beginning to rescue a championship point following the poorest qualifying performance of his career
