Privacy on the Internet is an Mirage’: Aussie Teen Charged Over Reported Mass Shooting Hoax in United States

An adolescent from the state of NSW has been formally accused for purportedly placing numerous false reports to 911 operators – a tactic called “SWATting” – falsely claiming mass shootings were happening at large commercial and schools throughout the United States.

Cross-Border Inquiry Results in Legal Action

The Australian federal police formally accused the teenager on the 18th of December. Officials state he is a member of a suspected loosely organised internet-based crime network concealed by anonymous accounts in order to initiate an “urgent and significant SWAT team deployment”.

“Frequently male youths between the ages of 11 to 25, are engaging in activities including swatting, releasing private info and cyber attacks to earn credibility, infamy and acknowledgement in their internet circles.”

During the investigation, officers seized multiple electronic devices and an illegal weapon discovered in the juvenile’s custody. This action was conducted under a joint police initiative created in late 2025.

Officials Deliver a Clear Message

A senior AFP official, speaking generally, cautioned that those thinking they can break the law with an internet connection and encrypted identities are being targeted.

The AFP confirmed it initiated its inquiry upon receiving tip-offs from US federal agents.

Jason Kaplan, from the global operations unit, said that the “hazardous and disturbing act” of false reports threatened public safety and consumed critical emergency resources.

“This investigation demonstrates that secrecy in the digital realm is an myth,” he commented in a combined announcement with authorities.

He continued, “We are committed to collaborating with our Australian counterparts, our international partners, and industry experts to identify and hold accountable people who misuse the internet to inflict damage to society.”

Legal Next Steps

The teenager was charged with multiple counts of telecommunications offences and one count of unlawful ownership of an illegal weapon. The individual could face up to a decade and a half in a correctional facility.

“The police's duty (is|remains) to preventing the harm and pain participants of such networks are imposing on society, while laboring under the illusion they are anonymous,” the assistant commissioner said.

The teenager was scheduled to face a New South Wales youth court on this week.
