The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately following his victory in November.

"My choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
