The Mystery Within the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

Editor's Note: The following details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel is detailed in the live show the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle to come.
