The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club pursue future success.
After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
