Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
